Jamie + Adam | Housing Works Bookstore
Soho, NY
Disclaimer, this might be my favorite wedding I’ve photographed to date. Besides the fact that Jamie & Adam are just awesome people, it aligned with so many of my favorite things.
They got married in a book store and I’m a total bibliophile. I. Love. Books. Seriously, they have taken over my living room. My dream is to someday have a library complete with floor to ceiling bookshelves and ladder I can roll around on like Belle in Beauty & the Beast.
They demonstrated their excellent taste in music by exiting their ceremony to “There Goes My Man” by The Pixies. Classic.
They actually said to me “we don’t care too much about formal pictures, we just want some really cool shots of us”. Pardon me? Am I in photographer heaven?
Everything from the venue (Housing Works Bookstore) to the food (fried chicken courtesy of Pies ‘n’ Thighs) was unique and low key. Including their positive attitudes about traipsing through the streets of Soho in balmy May drizzle. We started the day in an on theme Airbnb with great bookshelves to add some color to the dress picture and prepping shots.
In far from ideal weather, we set off from the Airbnb to the first look with umbrellas, hoping the weather will hold. They had their first look in Freeman Alley off Rivington St. It was a great location away the busy street. We kept the portraits loose and fun as we made our way to Housing Works, stopping along the way to shoot in front of an interesting facade or graffiti.
After a quick round of informal family pictures, they signed their ketubah and had a brief Jewish wedding ceremony full of laughs. Once dinner and speeches were out of the way it was time to get the party started! With the temperature rising on the dance floor (seriously, it was steamy) I was able to get Jamie and Adam to step outside for one last portrait, before shirts started coming off. The night ended fittingly, to a rousing rendition of “New York, New York”, leg kicks and all.
